Tánaiste Confirms €8.6 million funding for Communications and Information Services Workshop in the Defence Forces Training Centre
The Tánaiste and Minister for Defence, Micheál Martin, has today (5 August) confirmed funding of €8.6 million for the construction of a new Communications and Information Services (CIS) Workshop at the Defence Forces Training Centre in the Curragh Camp.
The project is being funded under the Defence Forces Infrastructure Development Plan (IDP).
Announcing the funding, the Tánaiste said: “Since becoming Minister for Defence, my focus has been the transformation and modernisation of the Defence Forces. Improving the quality of the Defence Forces infrastructure and facilities is a key part of this change.
“This project will deliver a state-of-the-art facility so our troops can maintain important communications equipment used by personnel and larger vehicle-based systems.”
The new CIS workshop will cater for these large vehicle-based systems (18 tonne MOWAG armoured personal carriers) as well as the next generation of armoured personnel carriers, which will be wider and taller and will weigh 25 to 30 tonnes.
The dedicated facility will also provide room for equipment storage, along with staff facilities including a dining area, as well as locker rooms, showers and toilet areas for personnel.
The contract for this project was won by Mythen Construction and forms part of the 2024 allocation for capital projects of €45 million. When taken together with the Defence Forces’ building maintenance and other projects, the overall building programme allocation stands at €56 million for this year.
