The Tánaiste and Minister for Defence, Simon Harris TD, today (25 April) reviewed the personnel of the 126th Infantry Battalion at Dún Uí Mhaoilíosa in Galway, ahead of their forthcoming deployment as part of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL).
This was the Tánaiste’s first ministerial review as Minister for Defence.
Speaking to the members of the 126th Infantry Battalion and their families, the Tánaiste recalled that he had recently visited the 125th Infantry Battalion at their headquarters in south Lebanon.
He said that his recent visit had served to,
“reinforce my view of the importance of the task you are undertaking and to illustrate that your presence in the region has real meaning.
Simon Harris stated:
“Your mission is more than just a deployment. It is a reflection of who we are as a country—a nation that believes in the rule of law, in multilateralism, and in the conviction that small countries can make a big difference.”
The Tánaiste also highlighted the diverse experience within the Battalion, noting that RSM Andrew Marlow, at fifty-nine years old, is the oldest member of the contingent, while nineteen-year-old Pte Charlie O’Leary from Galway represents the youngest member.
The total number of personnel deploying to UNIFIL with the 126th Infantry Battalion on this rotation is 308, which includes 10 personnel from the Armed Forces of Malta and 298 Irish personnel. Additionally, 16 females will deploy with the 126th Battalion, comprising 15 from the Defence Forces and one from the Armed Forces of Malta, showcasing the breadth of dedication and service in the formation.
He added:
“You are carrying forward a tradition undertaken previously by generations of Irish men and women who have stood in solidarity with vulnerable communities in southern Lebanon, helping to maintain peace and stability in some of the most challenging circumstances.”
Acknowledging the support of the families of those about to deploy with the 126th Infantry Battalion, the Tánaiste addressed them directly:
“Without your wholehearted support of the men and women standing in front of us this morning, we would not be able to fulfil this mission.
“I understand that this is a difficult time for you, but I want to assure you that the safety and security of your loved ones is of paramount importance to me, the Government and the Chief of Staff. Everything that can be done is being done to safeguard their wellbeing throughout this mission.”
The 126th Infantry Battalion will deploy to the UNIFIL area in three phases (chalks) throughout May.
