Minister Shane Ross and Minister of State Brendan Griffin welcome the launch of the Unite the Union Champions Cup, the FAI and IFA’s new cross-border competition.

The Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport, Mr. Shane Ross, TD, and the Minister with responsibility for Tourism and Sport, Mr. Brendan Griffin, TD, yesterday welcomed the launch of the Unite the Union Champions Cup, the FAI and IFA’s new cross-border competition.

Minister Ross said: “I welcome this new cross-border competition. It is a fantastic addition to the football calendar and one which promises to bring great excitement to the game of football on both sides of the border. I fully support this initiative which has the potential to bring people together and enhance relationships on both parts of the Island of Ireland.”

Minister Griffin added: “This competition will see the best of both leagues face off against each other in what promises to be a thrilling competition. With the help of trade union Unite, community-based projects in the competing team’s local areas are also set to benefit financially, reflecting Unite’s equality agenda. ”
