Minister Helen McEntee signs landmark treaties with UAE on extradition and mutual legal assistance in criminal matters

Minister for Justice Helen McEntee TD along with the UAE Justice Minister His Excellency Abdullah Bin Sultan Bin Awad Al Nuaimi have today (Monday) signed two agreements to further improve the effectiveness in their co-operation in fighting organised crime and to facilitate extradition.

During a formal meeting in Abu Dhabi, the two Ministers signed both agreements. Both emphasised the critical importance of having a sound legal basis grounded in international law for effective co-operation between judicial authorities in criminal matters, including criminal investigations, prosecutions, and proceedings.

Over the past two years, co-operation between Ireland and the UAE on combating transnational organised crime has been stepped up. These treaties cement this successful co-operation, and represent a crucial step in intensifying the combined fight to combat this serious threat.

These agreements will ensure that the processes for Extradition and Mutual Legal Assistance between Ireland and the United Arab Emirates are structured and simplified, whilst also ensuring essential safeguards are maintained in line with the rule of law.
