Minister of State for International Development and Diaspora, Neale Richmond, will attend a meeting of EU Foreign Ministers in Brussels on Tuesday 20 May.
Ministers will discuss Russian aggression against Ukraine and the Situation in the Middle East, including Syria.
On Ukraine, Ministers will receive an update from Minister of Foreign Affairs Andrii Sybiha on the latest diplomatic developments, and on Ukraine’s ongoing priorities and needs. Ministers will also be briefed by EU Special Envoy for Sanctions, David O’Sullivan, on ongoing anti-circumvention efforts. On the Middle East, discussion will focus on the humanitarian situation in Gaza and the situation in the West Bank, as well as the importance of continued engagement on the two State solution. Ministers will also discuss how the EU can continue to support Syria’s transitional Government.
Speaking ahead of the meeting, Minister Richmond said: “Russia continues its brutal attacks on Ukraine’s cities and infrastructure even as efforts continue to secure a ceasefire. I look forward to hearing from Foreign Minister Sybiha on the latest diplomatic efforts and how the EU can continue to provide support to Ukraine. We need to keep the pressure on Russia, including through additional sanctions, building on the latest package of measures agreed. The update from EU Special Envoy, David O’Sullivan is very welcome in this regard.”
On the situation in the Middle East, the Minister said: “The situation in Gaza is catastrophic after almost 80 days without humanitarian aid entering the Strip and the very real risk of famine conditions. I will be calling for an urgent ceasefire, the release of all remaining hostages and a massive scale-up of humanitarian aid into and throughout Gaza. We will also be discussing the deeply worrying situation in West Bank.
On Syria, we need to continue efforts to support a peaceful and inclusive transition that offers hope for a better future for all Syrians while respecting human rights.”
