Minister Coveney to attend Foreign Affairs Council in Brussels

On 18 July, Minister for Foreign Affairs and Minister for Defence, Simon Coveney, will attend a meeting of the Foreign Affairs Council in Brussels.
Ministers will discuss how to step up the EU’s response to Russia’s continuing aggression against Ukraine, and consider additional support for Ukraine, including the provision of additional assistance through the European Peace Facility and the application of additional sanctions. Ministers will also hold a videoconference exchange with the Foreign Minister of Ukraine, Dymtro Kuleba.
The Foreign Affairs Council will also discuss how to strengthen the EU’s relationship with Latin America and the Caribbean, Digital Diplomacy and recent developments in Sri Lanka and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
Speaking ahead of the discussion on Russian aggression against Ukraine, Minister Coveney said:
"The EU’s resolve to support Ukraine in its response to Russia’s illegal, unjustifiable and morally reprehensible war against Ukraine remains unyielding. We have repeatedly demonstrated this through the different strands of support that the EU has provided, including in relation to sanctions and the provision of military assistance. Our discussions at the Foreign Affairs Council will be a further opportunity to build on this support, including through a fifth package of assistance under the European Peace Facility and a seventh package of sanctions."
The Minister commented on Latin America and Caribbean:
"This is an excellent opportunity to consider how the EU can best strengthen our strategic relationship and cooperation with an important partner. The consequences of Russia’s war are being felt globally, and we must work together to mitigate the worst effects for our citizens."
