It is with deep sorrow that we mark the passing of His Holiness Pope Francis, a beloved leader whose profound influence transcended religious boundaries and inspired millions worldwide.
Pope Francis's commitment to justice, peace, and human dignity has left an indelible mark on the Church, Europe, and the world at large.
Pope Francis was an unwavering advocate for the values that are at the core of the European Union. In his address to the European Parliament in 2014, he reminded us of the Union’s fundamental responsibility to safeguard democracy and human rights, stating that Europe must "keep democracy alive for the peoples of Europe." His message of solidarity and co-operation between European nations should continue to inspire our collective efforts to uphold these principles.
Pope Francis’ teaching will continue to inspire the Catholic Church for many generations to come. I offer my condolences to His Eminence Cardinal Battista Re, Dean of the College of Cardinals, the entire Church, and to all those who mourn his loss.
Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam.
