The Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade, Simon Harris TD, and the Minister of State for International Development, Neale Richmond TD, have announced additional funding of €3m to support people in Sudan. The funding brings Ireland’s total support for people in Sudan in 2025 to €14.3m.
Sudan is now the world’s worst humanitarian crisis, with 12 million people forcibly displaced and approximately nine million people facing the immediate prospect of famine. The funding announced today will support the efforts of UN agencies working with the most affected communities to provide urgent humanitarian relief.
Speaking during UN High Level Week in New York, the Tánaiste said:
People in Sudan face unspeakable levels of brutality. Almost twice the population of Ireland face the immediate prospect of famine, with millions more facing daily food shortages.
The suffering of the people of Sudan simply has to end. Ireland continues to call on the international community to bring greater pressure to bring this appalling conflict to an end. We need to see a negotiated settlement which preserves Sudan’s territorial integrity.
Minister of State for International Development, Neale Richmond, said:
The humanitarian crisis in Sudan is dire and getting worse. The numbers of people who have been displaced and face famine are almost too large to comprehend. Ireland has consistently emphasised the need to protect civilians. We are particularly concerned by the shocking levels of sexual and gender-based violence.
This funding will help our partners to deliver much-needed humanitarian relief to people. As well as providing direct support, Ireland will also continue to use its voice to call for an end to the nightmare the people of Sudan are living through.
The €3m in funding announced today will be allocated as €1.5 million to the Sudan Humanitarian Fund, managed by UN OCHA, and €1.5m to support the work of UNHCR. This funding to UN OCHA will support protection, nutrition, and health, while the funding to UNHCR will provide assistance including water, sanitation and shelter to displaced people in Sudan and in neighbouring countries.
The Tánaiste and Minister of State Richmond are attending UN High Level Week events. Today, the Tánaiste will attend the opening session of UNGA hosted by the President of the General Assembly, Annalena Baerbock, and UN Secretary General, António Guterres. This evening he will meet Irish community leaders and host an event for the New York Irish community in Ireland House New York.
Minister Richmond will today attend a number of events focused on financing for development in the context of reduced global budgets. He will also attend a diaspora consultation with members of the Irish community in New York.
