Tánaiste convenes meeting of the Brexit Stakeholders’ Forum

The Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade, Simon Harris TD, today convened a meeting of the Brexit Stakeholders’ Forum in Iveagh House.

The meeting was an opportunity for the Tánaiste to update key stakeholders from across business, sectoral groups and other leading experts on the welcome outcomes of the EU-UK Summit in May. It also provided an opportunity to share perspectives on the challenges and opportunities as the EU-UK relationship evolves.

Following the Forum, the Tánaiste said: “The EU-UK Summit in May represented a significant landmark in reshaping the EU relationship with the UK. It set an ambitious, practical and balanced agenda of work in many areas of significant interest to Ireland, including energy, food safety and health standards, security and defence, justice and people-to-people connections.

“The Summit included, for example, a commitment to work towards an SPS agreement between the EU and the UK, in respect of Great Britain, which is very positive news for Irish exporters. The commitment to work towards linkage of our respective Emissions Trading Systems is also vitally important, particularly when it comes to our ambitions around a greener future.

“Ireland has consistently supported the strongest possible relationship between the EU and the UK. Negotiating agreements on the outcomes of the Summit will, of course, take some time, and implementation of existing agreements will be central to progressing this important agenda.

“I look forward to supporting strong momentum across the EU-UK relationship in the time ahead, recognising the practical benefits that this brings to people and business.”
