Tánaiste to attend UN High Level Week

The Tánaiste, Minister for Foreign Affairs and Minister for Defence, Micheál Martin TD will travel to New York on Sunday to attend United Nations High Level Week.

The Tánaiste will use the opportunity to underline Ireland’s commitment to a renewed, effective multilateral system and address the Summit of the Future. He will continue to highlight key foreign policy priorities including the Middle East, Ukraine and Sudan and emphasise the importance of the rules-based international order and respect for the UN Charter. He will further emphasise Ireland’s commitment to sustainable development and the 2030 Agenda.

The Tánaiste will attend a number of high-level events and hold a number of bilateral meetings with other foreign ministers.

The Tánaiste said:

"High Level Week and the UN General Assembly gatherings offer an important opportunity for Ireland and the world to debate, discuss and, most significantly, take real action on the issues that affect us all.

Ireland’s foreign policy is rooted in a belief in multilateralism, a commitment to the rules-based international order and adherence to international law. UNGA 2024 is a key international moment for Ireland and indeed the world. I look forward to working with like-minded partners and, vitally, those with whom we may not agree, to seek solutions and find a way forward to build a more peaceful, prosperous, just and sustainable world.

I also look forward to engaging with a wide range of counterparts to discuss the urgent need to address the conflicts in the Middle East, Ukraine and Sudan.”

On Sunday, the Tánaiste will attend a Ministerial Working Dinner on the Middle East hosted by the International Peace Institute.

On Monday, he will deliver a keynote address at an Interactive Dialogue on the Digital Future associated with the Summit of the Future. In the afternoon he will attend an event highlighting the situation for women in Afghanistan before joining EU Foreign Ministers at an Informal Council meeting where Ukraine and the Middle East will be the focus of discussions. On Monday evening he will attend an event shining a light on education.

On Tuesday, he will attend the Opening Ceremony of the UN General Assembly and hold a range of bilateral meetings with Foreign Ministers.

In the afternoon the Tánaiste will give the keynote address at an event organised by the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the UN that will seek enhanced commitments to gender equality in agriculture and food systems. He will also have a number of Irish community related engagements before attending a transatlantic high-level dinner hosted by the United States.

On Wednesday, he will deliver remarks at a symposium on Women, Peace and Leadership before attending a Ministerial meeting on the global humanitarian response in Sudan.
