Focussed Policy Assessment: Protection and Renewal of Ireland’s Regional and Local Roads

Building on a 2021 Spending Review, The Protection and Renewal of Ireland’s Road and Railway Network, this Focussed Policy Assessment (FPA) provides an examination of the protection and renewal of Ireland’s regional and local road network.

This FPA assesses the current policy and approach to funding and delivering protection and renewal on the regional and local road network, while also providing an insight into available data sources. It presents key trends observed across the 2015-2022 period, with a specific focus on expenditure incurred, levels of protection and renewal activity, and regional and local road quality improvements. A model for road deterioration and ongoing protection and renewal requirements are described along with assessment of the funding structure. The paper concludes with an examination of available data sources.
