National Sustainable Mobility Forum 19-20 April 2023

The Sustainable Mobility Policy (SMP), which was published in April 2022, includes 91 actions supporting behavioural change through a wide range of interventions including, among other things, public transport infrastructure and services, active travel promotion and supports, road safety initiatives, legislative measures, research, and public engagement. A progress report will be published in Q3 2023 to mark the first anniversary of the SMP.

During its first year, the policy was supported through the:

  • creation of a Project Management Office (PMO) to support delivery
  • establishment of a Leadership Group and Delivery Team to drive the implementation of the policy and ensure delivery of the SMP Pathfinder Programme
  • development of an Implementation Plan including milestones to be achieved, risks to be mitigated and key enablers for action delivery
  • delivery of a workshop on public acceptance, with focus on engagement and communication
  • establishment of SMP Research Network
  • advancement of the department’s Climate Action Public Engagement and Communications Strategy

Highlights from year one

  • commenced delivery of Connecting Ireland
  • reduced public transport fares and introduced new Young Adult Travel Card
  • Active Travel Units established in local authorities across the country
  • launch of Pathfinder Programme consisting of 35 demonstrator projects aligned to goals of SMP
  • Ireland’s first town bus service electrified - Athlone
  • Railway Order application for Metrolink submitted
  • extension of bike-share scheme to Waterford
