Young Ireland Advisory Council

The Young Ireland Advisory Council will give independent advice and support on policies that affect children and young people. Its members include members of civil society and independent experts, with experience of the issues that Young Ireland is trying to address, through their work, their lived experience or both.

The Advisory Council will have a work programme each year, outlining the areas that they will focus on. This will line up with the work of the Children and Young People’s Policy Forum, to make sure that the advice and feedback from the Advisory Council is brought forward to senior officials and managers in the appropriate agencies.

How were members appointed to the Advisory Council?

Members were appointed by the Minister for Children, Equality, Disability, Integration and Youth, via a number of methods. This includes two youth representatives of the National Youth Assembly of Ireland to ensure that the voices of children and young people remain central to the work of the Advisory Council.

Ten members, with experience across the spotlight areas of Young Ireland (mental health and well-being, disability services, and child poverty), as well as specialist expertise in the priority areas of Young Ireland, were appointed via an Expression of Interest process. The selection process aimed to ensure that the membership of the Council represents a broad and diverse range of people with expertise across the spotlights and priority areas of Young Ireland. The final membership reflects not just individual suitability, but also diversity of expertise and perspectives.

Three members were directly appointed by the Minister, in recognition of their expertise across Children’s Rights, Youth, and Early Years, and their service as Chair and Vice-Chairs of the Better Outcomes, Brighter Futures Advisory Council. Finally, an independent Chairperson was selected through an open Expression of Interest process.
