Professional Doctorate in Educational Psychology commences at Maynooth University

Minister for Education and Youth Helen McEntee TD has welcomed the commencement of the new Professional Doctorate in Educational Psychology at Maynooth University.

This landmark programme, which launched on Monday 15 September, will significantly expand the number of qualified educational psychologists available to the National Educational Psychological Service (NEPS), with 20 Trainee Educational Psychologists beginning their studies.

Supported by the Department of Education and Youth through a bursary scheme, supervised placements, and teaching input, the programme represents a major step forward in delivering on the government’s commitment to double the number of college places for educational psychologists, as outlined in the Programme for Government 2025.

Minister Helen McEntee welcomed the start of the programme, commending all those involved in its development:

“This is an important development for our education system. It will ensure a steady stream of highly trained professionals into NEPS, which provides an essential educational psychological service to schools across the country.”

The Department looks forward to supporting the Trainee Educational Psychologists throughout their journey and to the positive impact they will have on the wellbeing, inclusion and learning of children and young people in Irish schools.
