Today is World Oral Health Day 2025 and remember that “A Happy Mouth is a Happy Mind.” However, from Healthy Ireland surveys we know that not all people are happy with their oral health especially as they get older. This impacts their quality of life and results in them withdrawing from social activities where they have to eat, drink and smile and enjoy the company of friends and family.

This doesn’t need to be the case, there are several ways you can look after your oral health yourself. Firstly, the most important for oral and general health is to reduce your sugar intake in diet and drinks, and limit alcohol and tobacco use which are risk factors for poor oral health and cancer. Also, self-care at home such as toothbrushing twice daily and flossing is important. We know prevention works for oral health. Why not challenge yourself to make it a sugar free day for at least one day in March and, if you can, reduce it for longer or a month starting from now?
