Irish Sea herring quota applications
Applicants are asked to note:
Historically the small Irish Sea Herring fishery has taken place in the waters around the Isle of Man, including in the 6-12 nautical mile zone around the Isle of Man.
If your vessel is successful in the lottery and you wish to participate in the Irish Sea Herring Fishery, please be advised that, as per Article 502 of the EU/UK Trade and Co-Operation Agreement, if you wish to apply for an authorisation from the UK to access the 6-12nm waters around the Isle of Man to fish for Irish Sea Herring you will need to provide evidence of track record for your vessel for more than 10 days in any of the three 12 month periods ending on 31 January on, or between, 1 February 2017 and 31 January 2020 to this Department. The Department will seek authorisation from the UK authorities through the Commission for such vessels covered by the management arrangements.

Authorisation to access the North-East Atlantic Fisheries Commission (NEAFC) Regulatory Area
2025 Authorisation to access the North-East Atlantic Fisheries Commission (NEAFC) Regulatory Area
The Department will apply to the NEAFC, via the EU Commission, to renew, for 2025, NEAFC access for Irish Vessels that are currently authorised in 2024, provided that the vessel is registered and holds a valid Irish sea-fishing boat licence.
The list of Irish notified vessels for 2024 is available on the NEAFC website at the following link:
The EU Commission have advised that applications for access will only be accepted by the NEAFC from 01 January 2025. It is also a requirement that Ireland, as a contracting party, issues an authorisation for each vessel when access has been confirmed. As soon as it is technically allowed, and as early as possible in 2025, the Department will issue this authorisation.
It will be necessary for any new vessel or vessel which has changed ownership before the end of 2024 to make a new application.
