Thursday 18th Nov, 19.00-20.30 - “Antimicrobial Resistance” The Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Charlie McConalogue T.D., will launch Animal Health and Antibiotic Resistance Awareness Week. This evening’s webinar will provide an overview of the connection between antibiotic usage and animal health, with perspectives from farmers, vets, doctors and researchers.
Monday 22nd Nov, 19.00-20.30 - “One Health focussing on zoonoses” Minister of State for Agriculture with responsibility for land use and biodiversity, Senator Pippa Hackett will make the opening remarks. The webinar will describe the latest trends in important zoonotic diseases (animal diseases that can transfer to humans). It will include speakers from the Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs in the UK, the HSE, UCD and the Irish veterinary community.
Tuesday 23rd Nov, 19.00-20.30 - “Herd health, highlighting the importance of proactive herd health planning in maximising health and minimising anti-microbial usage” Minister of State with responsibility for Research and Development, Farm Safety and New Market Development Martin Heydon T.D. will make the opening remarks. The webinar will present a variety of views on herd health from a Nuffield Farming Scholar, the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons, Animal Health Ireland and the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine.
Wednesday 24th Nov, 19.00-20.30 - “Emerging disease threats” The final webinar will include some very interesting speakers who will give their views and speak of lessons learned regarding foot and mouth disease, bluetongue virus, low pathogenic avian influenza and antimicrobial resistance. There will also be a talk on the veterinary contribution to Covid modelling. Speakers come from Harper Adams University, UCD, the Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs of Northern Ireland, Animal Health Ireland, and the National Disease Control Centre of this Department. Minister McConalogue will make the closing remarks to close the week’s proceedings.

Lectures in third level courses:

Several third level education institutions have agreed to host lectures on animal health awareness for their students during Animal Health Awareness Week. Most lectures will be delivered remotely. Participating institutions include Teagasc agricultural colleges, Athlone IT, Dundalk IT, IT Carlow, IT Waterford, Letterkenny IT, University College Dublin and St. John’s College, Cork.
