Ploughing Championships Research Showcase

Government supported research for climate mitigation in agriculture

Agriculture is a major contributor to Irelands greenhouse gas emissions due to the predominance of livestock within the sector. While the challenge to reduce this is significant, research, including that funded by the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine, has been making great strides in developing insights, technologies and solutions to mitigate these emissions.

A snapshot of this research was showcased at the 2022 Ploughing Championships where scientists from Teagasc and University College Dublin where able to share innovative new solutions in animal, pasture and soil management that could deliver significant impacts in the near future.

A recording of the seminar is now available. Watch back:

Welcome and opening remarks from Minister of State with special responsibility for research and development, farm safety and new market development, Martin Heydon T.D.
The benefits of multi-species swards on farms – Prof. Tommy Boland, UCD
Managing farmland nitrogen emissions – Dr. Karl Richards, Teagasc
Breeding, feed additives and other GHG mitigation strategies – Dr. Stuart Kirwan, Teagasc
Q&A and closing remarks – Minister Martin Heydon
