This page contains information on the health certificate requirements for animals movements into and out of Ireland.
For information on welfare or transporter requirements (e.g. driver certification and vehicle authorisation) please see the transport webpage or contact transport@agriculture.gov.ie.
It is important to make sure all CITES certificates (for endangered animals) are in place before any move. Please see Introduction to CITES/National Parks & Wildlife Service (npws.ie).
1. Travel within the EU:
These animals should travel within the EU with an original signed owner self declaration (rather than a health certificate on TRACES NT) and must abide by the conditions on the health certificate.
The owner self declaration must be produced and signed at the premises of origin of the animals and then travel with the animals.
The owner self declaration for the animals must contain the below information:
This self declaration should contain the following:
• description of the animals (microchips etc if applicable), their species, category (e.g. type of animals or for what use – supplying a petshop, to private home etc) and how many are travelling;
• identification and registration of the animals, if there is any (microchips etc, whether they are coming from a registered pet shop or zoo etc.)
• Statement that the animals are healthy and disease free, and fit to travel.
• Details of their place of origin, owner name, address etc.
• Details of their place of destination, owner name, address etc
• when relevant, details of any places of assembly or rest they will undertake en route
• Details of the means of transport and the transporter – Type 2 authorisation, vehicle registration details etc.
Pet animals of the above species that are NOT travelling with their owner directly (on the same plane/boat) and are instead being moved by someone other than the owner on the owners behalf, must travel according to the above rules.
2. Travel outside of the EU:
To enter Ireland from outside the EU please see gov - Live Animal Imports from Third Countries into Ireland (www.gov.ie) or contact animalproductimports@agriculture.gov.ie with any questions.
To be exported from Ireland to a country outside the EU, please contact that country to find out what the health certificate requirements are.
