What the National Beef Welfare Scheme is
The objective of the National Beef Welfare Scheme (NBWS) is to further increase the economic efficiency of, and enhance animal health and husbandry, on suckler farms.
How to qualify
You can apply for the scheme if you:
- are the holder of an active herd number with Herd Owner status;
- submitted an application for a Basic Income Support for Sustainability in 2023; and
- are a suckler beef farmer, that is, you have eligible calves born to eligible suckler cows during the period 1 July 2022 to 30 June 2023
Actions you need to take to qualify for payment
- IBR sampling
- meal feeding calves pre- and post-weaning.
Both actions are mandatory and must be completed satisfactorily for a maximum overall payment.
Rates of payment
IBR: From €120 to €300 per herd depending on the number of animals tested.
Meal Feeding: €35 per calf up to a maximum of 40 calves.
Payments will be made in December 2023.
