These schemes support home ownership and are operated by local authorities.
Part V scheme
The Part V scheme allows a local authority to require developers to set aside a certain proportion of new developments for social or affordable housing.
Shared ownership scheme
The Shared Ownership Scheme allowed people to start by buying a proportion of a home with ownership shared between the buyer and the local authority. That proportion was increased in steps until the buyer owned it all. This scheme has been stood down since 2011 for new projects.
1999 affordable housing scheme
Under the 1999 Affordable Housing scheme, local authorities provide newly built houses at a discounted price on their own lands. This scheme closed in 2011 for new projects.
Mortgage allowance scheme
Social housing tenants and tenant purchasers who are taking out a mortgage to buy or build a private house can qualify for the Mortgage Allowance scheme.
