The National Recreation Policy represents the second stage in the fulfillment of the call, identified in the National Children's Strategy (2000), for more play and recreational opportunities for young people.
Called Teenspace: National Recreation Policy for Young People, this policy is aimed at young people between the ages of 12 and 18 and was developed from the findings of research and consultation with young people on their needs and on the facilities that would most meet those needs.
With the launch of Ready, Steady, Play: A National Play Policy, Ireland became one of the first countries in the world to produce a detailed national policy on play.
There are a number of play and recreation schemes promoted and developed through the partnership between this department and the Local Authority Play and Recreation Network (LAPRN).
