The final SDG National Stakeholder Forum of 2023 will be held on Friday, 17 November in the Aviva Stadium, Dublin. The theme for the day is Biodiversity and Community - Building Resilience while Leaving No One Behind. The theme is a response to feedback from both the January and April Fora and aligns with the political declaration adopted by the UN General Assembly High Level meeting in September.
Feedback received included requests for information on “How The SDG’s can be rolled out at grass root/community level” and information on how best to “maximise community supports”. There were also requests to high-light biodiversity issues and “to consider the well-being of other beings and life in our communities and nationally.” As one contributor commented “We are all connected and the health of our planet and other species has a direct impact of the health of humans”.
The theme also reflects the Leaders Dialogue 2 from the SDG September Summit – “Building resilience and leaving no one behind”. Speakers at the United Nations stressed the need to make communities, institutions and the natural and built environment more resilient to political change, natural disasters and climate change. Achieving the goals by 2030 present many challenges to the international community and in the afternoon session the forum will review Ireland’s relationship with and place in the international community with a focus on Ireland’s commitment to the Strategy for Partnership with Small Island Developing states.
Secretary General Guterres has called on individuals and organizations globally to “present credible, serious and new climate action and nature-based solutions that will move the needle forward and respond to the urgency of the climate crises.” The forum is asking stakeholders to consider the role we as individuals along with local and international communities can play in accelerating the success of the SDG goals.
Our morning panel includes:
Department of Rural and Community Development
Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage
Department of Foreign Affairs and
Dr Cara Augustenborg, UCD and member of Ireland’s Climate Change Advisory Council.
There are lived experience speakers throughout the day. In the morning there are speakers from Cloughjordan Eco Village and the Dingle Project. Speakers in the afternoon include lived experience from Vietnam and Papua New Guinea.
