In response to the crisis in Afghanistan in August 2021, Ireland, through the Irish Refugee Protection Programme, made approximately 560 refugee places available for humanitarian cases from Afghanistan. The Department has co-operated with a wide range of organisations, including Amnesty International, the Irish Refugee Council, the Irish Human Rights and Equality Commission and the UNHCR, to identify individuals and families whom we could welcome to Ireland under the IRPP. Priority was given to human rights defenders, people supporting women’s organisations, LGBTI+ activists, journalists, judges and those most at risk from the Taliban takeover.
Conscious of the dangers experienced by these groups within Afghanistan, the Department has sought to respond innovatively to this crisis, including seeking support from potential refugee sponsors and civil society organisations to enable it to maximise the number of places available on its programme for Afghan nationals.
This response to that emergency situation has now come to an end. The IRPP will continue to register requests for access to the programme and will seek to accept a limited number of refugees from Afghanistan in a more limited manner dependent on capacity and the application of objective criteria.
Unfortunately, IRPP resources are currently at capacity in terms of accommodation and pressures from ongoing commitments from other strands of our resettlement programme. Applications under the Afghan programme are currently focused only on those potential beneficiaries who have verifiable accommodation and integration supports already available within the community in Ireland.
