Following a proposal from the Minister for Employment Affairs and Social Protection, the government decided on 9 January 2019 to set up an interdepartmental group to explore the most appropriate organisation arrangements for social inclusion work schemes currently operated by the Department of Employment Affairs and Social Protection (DEASP).
The department has a broad span of responsibilities as evident from its mission statement, which is ‘to promote active participation and inclusion in society through the framework of employment rights and provision of income supports, employment services and other services’.
A primary focus of the department, for people of working age, is to support people into employment.
The department operates a number of employment support schemes including the Community Employment Scheme (CE), the Rural Social Scheme (RSS) and the (closed) Job Initiative (JI) scheme. These schemes have mixed objectives - part activation, part income support and part social inclusion.
