The second SDG National Stakeholder Forum of 2023 was held on Tuesday, 24 April at the Aviva Stadium Dublin. It was a hybrid event with 120 in person and 100 online attendants.
The focus for the day was compiling feedback on Ireland’s second Voluntary National Review (VNR) which was presented at the United Nations High Level Political Forum (HLPF) in New York on 19 July 2023. In keeping with the HLPF theme for 2023 - Accelerating the recovery from the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) and the full implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development at all levels - Ireland’s VNR theme was 'Building Back Better while Leaving No One Behind’.
The forum was an opportunity for stakeholders to participate in and contribute to the report which includes a dedicated stakeholder chapter and six thematic chapters covering Education, Employment and Social Protection, Health, Community Engagement and Inclusion, Housing and Climate Action and the Circular Economy. Ireland’s report is the first VNR presented to the HLPF which contains a dedicated youth chapter.
The forum opened to music from Arabesque followed by a policy overview and discussion of the thematic chapters. A panel of six Government Departments presented on their individual chapters. Following the presentations participants joined breakout sessions reviewing all six areas. Before breaking for lunch participants received an overview of the stakeholder chapters including presentations from the Oireachtas All Party Group for the SDGs, Coalition 2030, the Libraries policy, Local Government Management Agency and UNESCO. Details of all speakers can be found in the agenda below.
Immediately after lunch there was a second breakout session reviewing the content of the Stakeholder chapter. Singers from the Citadel Choir welcomed the participants back from the breakout groups and Jessica Gill, UN Youth Delegate presented on findings from and approach to the Youth Consultation Process. Rapporteurs then provided feedback from the breakout sessions attended by Eamon Ryan, Minister for the Environment, Climate and Communications. The floor opened for a discussion on the day’s presentations and findings.
The third forum of 2023 will be held on 17 November at the Aviva Stadium, Dublin.
