The United Nations Special Rapporteur on the sale and sexual exploitation of children, Ms Maud de Boer-Buquicchio, begins a one week visit to Ireland this morning to look at systems in place for child protection in Ireland with a particular focus on child exploitation. While here, she will meet with government officials, members of the judiciary, local authorities and civil society. The Special Rapporteur will travel to Limerick and Galway and she will also visit childcare and residential centres and meet with representatives of Comhairle na nOg.
Special Rapporteurs are independent experts appointed by the UN Human Rights Council to undertake fact-finding and monitoring on human rights issues. As part of its commitment to the promotion and protection of human rights, Ireland believes that all countries should be held to account for their compliance with international human rights obligations and to that end has issued standing invitation to all UN Special Rapporteurs.
The Special Rapporteur on the sale and sexual exploitation of children is mandated to investigate the exploitation of children around the world and make recommendations for the protection of the rights of the children concerned.
At the conclusion of her visit, the Special Rapporteur will hold a press conference on Sunday 21 May. She will present a report on her visit to the UN Human Rights Council in March 2019.
