The Department of Transport has today, Tuesday 17th of December, published its Gender Pay Gap Report 2024. This report is the result of analysis of payroll metrics as of the snapshot date of 30 June 2024.
The gender pay gap is the difference in the average hourly salary of women and men across the Department of Transport. The Department of Transport’s 2024 mean gender pay gap is 13.69%, equating to a €5.20 difference in the mean hourly rate of pay and the median gender pay gap is 17.76%, equating to a €6.36 difference in the median hourly rate between male and female staff members.
Between 2022 and 2023, we successfully reduced the mean hourly pay gap from 20.42% to 13.7% and the median hourly pay gap from 20.29% to 14.12%, which was the biggest reduction across the Civil Service.
In the Department of Transport, all employees’ salaries are determined by agreed public sector pay scales, which apply equally to both women and men according to their grade and incremental service points. Variations in employee pay can be influenced by several complex factors, including occupational segregation, work patterns, , and the gender distribution in senior or junior positions. The Department is committed to further reduce these gaps and are actively working towards achieving even greater improvements by 2025.
The Department of Transport recognises that fostering a diverse and inclusive workforce is essential for achieving gender balance and enhancing overall organisational performance. The Department’s employee experience initiatives are specifically designed to support equitable opportunities for all employees, regardless of gender. The Department is committed to gender equality, which is reflected in recruitment strategies, professional development programs, and employee experience initiatives.
Through these actions, and as part of its Public Sector Equality and Human Rights Duty, the Department of Transport strives to build a diverse workforce that not only represents the communities it serves but also drives innovation and excellence in the transport sector.
