3D Sculpture of David and Goliath to be unveiled as part of 'On a Pedestal' exhibition in Dublin Castle

The OPW have commissioned Jam Sutton, a multi-disciplined British artist to produce a large 3D printed version of his sculpture David and Goliath which features in the 'On a Pedestal' exhibition on display in Dublin Castle. The original piece 'David and Goliath' which Jam produced in 2015 is made from Carrara marble, 45 x 23 x 26cm.

The exhibition of classical busts in Dublin Castle brings together works from an international group of contemporary artists who explore the genre of the portrait bust in a variety of media: from wood to stone, from marble to ceramics, from stainless steel to more ephemeral materials such as sugar. Portrait busts have been appearing in Western arts since classical Greek and Roman times, depicting illustrious figures such as deities, heroes, emperors and philosophers. The idea of this exhibition is to render visible the portrait bust in a 21st century way.

Speaking about his piece, Jam Sutton said:

"My work is an exploration of identity and technology, combining digital production methods with traditional artisan processes. I’m very interested in juxtaposing portrayals of contemporary identity with classical culture. The final piece is created in Carrara marble, which has been produced utilizing a process of technological advancement in human scanning and 3D printing."

Among those included in the exhibition are Irish artists Ursula Burke, Janet Mullarney and Kevin Francis Gray. International artists include Sir Tony Cragg, Barry X Ball, Giulio Paolini, Jam Sutton and Ah Xian. Curated by Mary Heffernan, General Manager of Dublin Castle, Hélène Bremer, Dutch art historian and curator and Nuala Goodman, Milan-based Irish artist and curator.
