Kevin Moran TD, Minister of State with responsibility for the Office of Public Works (OPW) and Flood Relief, announces that the Office of Public Works will undertake essential conservation works on the exterior walls of Athlone Castle. These works are due to commence next Wednesday 27 February.
Minister Moran said:
"I welcome the commenment of these essential works to the walls of Athlone Castle. These works once completed will enhance the landscape of the Castle which is an integral focal point of the town of Athlone and an important visitor attraction for the Hidden Heartland of Ireland. These works will cause some disruption to the visitor experience and the local residences but my colleagues in the OPW have created a schedule of works to minimise this disruption in and around the Castle."
Due to these works, Athlone Castle Visitor Center and grounds will be closed to the public from 27/02/19 to 15/03/19 and from 13/05/19 to 24/05/19 inclusive to facilitate these works. For public safety reasons it will be necessary to close the tunnel under the town bridge and adjacent pedestrian area for these periods also.
We apologise for any inconvenience caused.
