Minister O’Donnell and Commissioner Harris welcome commencement works on new Newcastle West Garda Station, Limerick

  • new station to serve as Garda District Headquarters
  • unprecedented funding allocated to modernising Garda Estate

Minister Patrick O’Donovan, Minister of State for the Office of Public Works Kieran O’Donnell and Commissioner Drew Harris today (Tuesday) visited Newcastle West, Limerick where site mobilisation works has begun for the construction of a new 3-storey building on the site of the former Garda Station to provide a new Garda District Headquarters in Limerick.

The Newcastle West Headquarters is one of many projects being delivered under a comprehensive programme to modernise Garda buildings. The OPW and An Garda Síochána, with the support of the Department of Justice, are working to improve and modernise Garda facilities across the country. The investment will contribute to the strategic improvement of State-owned property to deliver modern Garda facilities with various energy efficiencies.

Minister Patrick O’Donovan said:

“It is with great pleasure that I am here today to witness this significant milestone in the delivery of a New Garda Station for the people of Newcastle West. The construction of this new Garda Station is such an important development for policing in Limerick. As well as providing a modern fit-for-purpose facility for Garda members and the visiting public, the station will meet a very high environmental standard.

"During my time as Minister of State for the OPW, I saw the project go to tender and I am delighted to be here today to mark the commencement of works on site. I look forward to seeing the progress over the coming months and have no doubt that upon completion this new Garda Station will provide members of An Garda Síochána a fit for purpose work environment ensuring they can continue to deliver their invaluable service to the people of Newcastle West."

Minister of State for the Office of Public Works Kieran O’Donnell said:

“As Minister of State for the Office of Public Works, I am delighted to be here in Newcastle West, Co. Limerick to witness the commencement of works on the new An Garda Síochána District Headquarters. This project involves the construction of a new three storey building on the site of the former Garda station.

"This purpose built Garda Station will provide modern, value for money and energy efficient accommodation that will assist members of An Garda Síochána in the delivery of their work.

"This project is one of many significant capital projects that the OPW, An Garda Síochána and the Department of Justice are collaborating on. It is an example of Government’s commitment to delivering high quality work environments that have the capacity to meet future demands.

"When completed, this state-of-the-art facility, here in Newcastle West, will greatly assist An Garda Síochána in continuing to deliver their invaluable service to the local community and surrounding district while also providing enhanced policing infrastructure capacity in county Limerick.”

Minister McEntee said:

“I am delighted that work has now fully commenced on the new Garda station for Newcastle West. The old station was demolished in 2023 and enabling works were completed last year. Today marks an important step in the provision of policing services for the people of Newcastle West and the surrounding areas.

"It is so important that both Gardaí and members of the public can make use of modern, fit for purpose facilities. The benefits of a new Garda station will be felt by everyone in Newcastle West and in the towns and villages across Limerick.

"This new station is part of a large programme of work to upgrade the Garda estate. To support this work, over €220 million has been invested in the Garda estate between 2020 and 2024. We have also provided a further €128 million for Garda estates projects in 2025 and 2026 under the National Development Plan.”

This programme will provide new and modernised Garda stations and other facilities to support An Garda Síochána to meet the operational, functional and accommodation requirements. The projects are being delivered as part of An Garda Síochána Operating Model, which are in line with their transformation programme.

Garda Commissioner Drew Harris said:

“I am pleased to see works commence on the new Newcastle West Garda Station at Churchtown Road. This new purpose built station will not only greatly improve facilities for our personnel working from here, but crucially will support them in their mission of keeping the people of Newcastle West and surrounding areas safe. I acknowledge and commend the ongoing commitment of Gardaí attached to Newcastle West to providing a policing service to the local community while these works are ongoing.”

Minister of State Niall Collins stated:

“Today is a significant moment in the delivery of a new Garda Station for Newcastle West as works commence on site of the former Garda Station. This project is one of many projects being delivered under a comprehensive programme to modernise Garda buildings across the country. Upon completion, the new three story building will provide An Garda Síochána with a space that meets their operational, functional and accommodation requirements. It will also enhance the service that the Gardaí are able to provide to the community of Newcastle West. I am delighted to see the progress that is being made to ensure that it can be delivered as soon as possible.”

Notes

The Newcastle West Garda District Headquarters project comprises the construction of a new 3-storey building on the site of the former Garda Station on Churchtown Road, Newcastle West, Co. Limerick. The development includes a rooftop telecommunications mast, a single-storey annex to the street, an ancillary building of 64m2 to the rear including an ESB substation, backup generator, bin store, fuel store and equipment store, car, bicycle and motorcycle parking and relevant site works. The overall site area is approximately 0.15 ha. The project will provide modern, fit-for purpose, value for money and energy efficient accommodation for An Garda Síochána in Newcastle West.

The contract for the project was awarded to Conack Construction in December 2024. Work to commence on site on 13 January 2025.
