OPW to issue boat permits for 2025 season at Sceilg Mhichíl

The Office of Public Works (OPW) has welcomed today’s decision by the High Court to allow it to issue Sceilg Mhichíl boat operator permits to the successful tenderers in a recent competition.

The OPW will be in contact with the boat operators to complete the process and boat trips to Sceilg Mhichíl are expected to begin on Saturday, 7 June 2025, subject to weather conditions.

This follows legal proceedings brought by two unsuccessful tenderers which had, in recent weeks, prevented the OPW from issuing permits for the 2025 season.

An OPW motion to lift the suspension, which was in place arising from these proceedings, was heard this week in the High Court. The Judge has now ordered that the OPW can issue permits for the 2025 season.

The OPW is acutely aware of the key role the Island plays in the tourism economy of South Kerry and the wider region, and has been making all necessary preparations to reopen the world heritage site.

The OPW is looking forward to welcoming visitors to the World Heritage site this Season.
