Step Back in Time at Oldbridge House for National Heritage Week

Visitors are invited to step back in time at Oldbridge House for National Heritage Week which runs from the 17 - 25 of August. National Heritage Week is a celebration of Ireland's built, natural and cultural heritage and aims to generate awareness, appreciation and preservation of Ireland’s wonderful resources.

The chosen theme for this year’s Heritage Week is the celebration of Pastimes and Past Times and to mark National Heritage Weekend, the Office of Public Works (OPW) has organised a wide range of events across OPW sites, with something for absolutely everyone.

At the Battle of the Boyne the OPW will host a series of heritage week events around the dual heritage of the Oldbridge Estate and Oldbridge House. To celebrate the week admission is free on these tours.

August 18, 11am – 4pm - Interactive 17th Century Social and Military Living History Displays

Be transported back to the time of the Battle of the Boyne and learn all about the Baroque horses and the training of a Cavalry Trooper. Witness for yourself the skills of a well-trained Musketeer and hear about the regiments who fought the battle in 1690.

Experience Social Living History also and meet some of the characters that would have had roles at the battle, such as the Sutler, Barber Surgeon and Paymaster. If you have ever wondered how the 60,000 troops of the Battle of the Boyne were fed, paid and medically treated, our interactive living history will answer your questions.

August 18th - Battle Site Walk at 2pm

Why not join us on a short walk from the Visitor Centre to Oldbridge Village and see the strategic sites important to the events on the day of the Battle of the Boyne. Our soldier guide will bring history to life.

August 25th, 12pm and 2pm - Interactive Victorian Living History Tours

Step back in time on a tour of the Victorian basement of Oldbridge House and see how the servants worked below stairs. Our living history tours will show you the tasks the servants were expected to perform and will take you through the vaulted basement to bring history alive.

National Heritage Week is coordinated by the Heritage Council and is now one of Ireland’s largest cultural events. This year some half a million people are expected to attend some 2,200 events across the country.
