The Government’s July Stimulus Package includes a capital allocation of an additional €75m for primary and post primary schools to carry out any reconfiguration works necessary to support schools’ re-opening in late August. The type of works may involve reconfiguration of classroom space, re-purposing rooms to provide additional space, adapting storage facilities, altering desk layouts, adapting toilet areas etc.
This will see a doubling of the minor works grant to primary schools, through an additional enhanced minor works grant totalling €30m.
Post-primary schools will receive a new, once-off minor works grant worth a total of €42m.
In addition, a reserve fund of €3m is being retained by the Department, to be targeted at individual schools that require greater levels of re-configuration works, which will be dealt with on a case by case basis by the Department.
Schools do not need to apply for this grant, it will be paid directly to eligible schools during the month of August.
What the new capital allocations mean for schools:
Minor Works Grant
This enhanced grant is a doubling of the previous year’s allocation to each school.
For instance, a 60 pupil school which received €6,610 in 2019 will receive €13,220 in 2020, a 300 pupil school which received €11,050 in 2019 will receive €22,100 in 2020.
This grant will be automatically paid to primary schools in August
New Minor works grant for all post-primary schools
€42m has been made available in today’s package for a new, once-off minor works payment to all post-primary schools.
This measure will involve payment of a once-off minor works to schools ranging from circa. €30,000 to €110,000 for each school depending on overall enrolments.
For instance, a 600 student school would receive €70,000 and a 1,000 student school would receive €110,000.
This grant will be automatically paid to post-primary schools in August
