Simon Coveney TD, Minister for Defence and Minister for Foreign Affairs today (20 October 2021) announced that he has approved the plans for the upgrading and refurbishment of Block F in McKee Barracks as part of the overall multi million plan to modernize this historically important Military installation.
The entire McKee Barracks complex is designated as a ‘Protected Structure’ in recognition of its historical and conservation status. This project represents the second phase in the reconfiguration of the McKee Barracks. This particular project entails the refurbishment and conversion of the building to facilitate the provision of fit for purpose optimal office accommodation for several military purposes.
Minister Coveney stated:
"The refurbishment and upgrading of this facility is being undertaken as part of the 5 year Defence Forces Infrastructure Development Plan. This investment is part of a suite of investments we are making in our Defence Forces over the next 5 years, to ensure that our Defence Forces are enabled to carry out their assigned roles."
This project together with the Block H refurbishment (now under way), the external upgrade of the Headquarters building to commence in the coming months, the refurbishment of the former Chief of Staff’s Houses and the planned upgrade of the Administration Block provides for an investment in excess of €20m in capital works for McKee Barracks in the next 2 to 3 years alone.
