The Tánaiste and Minister for Defence Micheál Martin this week received government approval for the Defence Forces’ proposed training engagement with the EU Military Assistance Mission in Ukraine (EUMAM).
It follows Cabinet approval in February of the participation of up to 30 Permanent Defence Forces personnel to the newly established EUMAM in support of Ukraine.
Training activities are to include:
The Tánaiste said:
“The EUMAM is aimed at strengthening the capacity of the Ukrainian Armed Forces to defend Ukraine’s territorial integrity within its internationally recognised borders, and to deter and respond to possible future military offensives by Russia and other potential aggressors. The government regards the participation of the Defence Forces in this mission as an important signal of Ireland’s unwavering support for and solidarity with Ukraine.”
The government also noted that the deployment of Defence Forces’ trainers would be supplemented by a small number of staff positions in the Military Planning and Conduct Capability based in Brussels, Belgium and in the multinational Special Training Command in Strausberg, Germany.
EUMAM Ukraine provides training to the Ukrainian Armed Forces personnel at basic, advanced and specialised levels on medical assistance, CBRN, demining, logistics and communication, maintenance and repair, among others.
There is currently one Defence Forces Officer working in the Military Planning and Conduct Capability in Brussels and three personnel serving with the Special Training Command in Strausberg since 3 April 2023.
On 11 April, the Tánaiste approved the delivery by the Defence Forces to the Ukrainian Armed Forces of two suitable training modules - Tactical Combat Casualty Care (TCCC)/Combat Life Saver and Demining & Clearance.
The TCCC course was successfully delivered together with German Army medical trainers in Dornstadt, Germany under the multinational Special Training Command in Germany.
The Demining and Explosive Ordnance Disposal Clearance course was successfully hosted in Cyprus from 24 April to 19 May (four weeks), under the coordination responsibility of the Polish Combined Arms Training Command.
