Minister of State at the Departments of Finance and Public Expenditure and Reform, with special responsibility for Financial Services, eGovernment and Public Procurement, Eoghan Murphy TD, said that local authorities across the country can be confident that they will be achieving very good value for money in their electricity spend for the next three years.
The Office of Government Procurement (OGP) has awarded 31 new contracts for the supply of metered electricity on behalf of all local authorities, which covers electricity supply to local government offices throughout Ireland.
The collective value of the contracts is estimated to be in the region of €54 million. The projected cost reductions are more than €9 million over the three years of the contract.
This reflects one of the OGP’s key objectives – to secure savings for the taxpayer by taking a national approach to public procurement.
These savings will allow local authorities to focus their spending on other essential services.
Minister Murphy welcomed the news:
"Delivering this kind of value and long-term certainty of pricing on behalf of local authorities is a great achievement. These contracts will run until the end of June 2019 and will enable local authorities to budget effectively."
The contracts will provide local authorities with a fixed price for metered electricity supply (excluding domestic tariff) for a three-year period and covers in excess of 5,000 supply points throughout the country.
The contracts were awarded to SSE Airtricity, following procurement competition under the OGP’s Electricity Framework Agreement.
