The Minister for Rural and Community Development, Michael Ring TD, officially opened the Westport Horse and Pony Show today (Sunday, 3 June).
The Westport Horse and Pony Show, which is celebrating its 51st edition, received funding of €7,000 for this year’s show through a grant from Minister Ring’s Department of Rural and Community Development to the Irish Shows Association (ISA).
Minister Ring said:
“I am absolutely delighted to be here to officially open the Westport Horse and Pony Show. This is the 51st year of this Show, which started in 1967 on the lawn of Westport House, and Shows like this are still an integral part of community life in rural areas.
“I was delighted to provide funding of €812,000 to the Irish Shows Association last year, which will provide up to €7,000 each towards the running costs of various shows across Ireland in 2018. I am very pleased that this show has benefited from the maximum funding available, demonstrating as it does, some of the best values of rural life. I am always heartened by the level of community participation and support involved in holding these events. I want to offer my congratulations to everyone involved in the Westport Show this year and I wish the Show all the very best for the future.”
