Minister of State at the Department of Rural and Community Development Sean Canney TD has welcomed the recent announcements of projects to be funded from Dormant Accounts Funding by Ministers Shane Ross, David Stanton and Katherine Zappone.
In total over 150 projects have been announced by the three ministers, with a total funding in excess of €4.5 million. The projects cut across a range of government policy areas, namely sports measures, support for refugees and the development of children.
Minister Canney has responsibility for administration of the Dormant Accounts Fund and the money in that fund is used to support projects aimed at tackling economic, social or educational disadvantage, or supporting persons with a disability.
In welcoming the funding Minister Canney said:
“I am delighted to see these projects being progressed across government departments. The fund was established to support those who are disadvantaged in our society, and these projects very much deliver on that aim and put the money in the fund to good use.
“With regard to the sports projects, many are national in nature and will benefit people right across Ireland, but I am also delighted to see funding for my own area for community sport and physical activity hubs in Ballybane/Doughiska.
“These projects across government add to a number of projects supported by my own department. Over the last few weeks Dormant Accounts funding has been used in my department to support Social Innovation Fund, Senior Alert Scheme, Alone and the Age Friendly Ireland Programme.”

Minister Sean Canney has responsibility for the administration of the Dormant Accounts funding and ensuring the funds are used to support projects across government aimed at addressing disadvantage and supporting those with a disability.
The Department of Children is using Dormant Accounts Funding to support its Quality and Capacity Building Initiative. Grants are bring provided to organisations to enable formal and informal knowledge sharing explicitly focussed on enhancing practice and professional dialogue and curiosity around evidence informed prevention and early intervention. The Department of Justice and Equality is using Dormant Accounts Funding to fund projects nationwide to support the labour market integration of female refugees and the female family members of refugees. You can find more information at the following link:
The Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport is using Dormant Accounts Funding to support sports projects nationwide with the aim of brining local people together and provide a home for local clubs and sports organisations. In particular, 154 projects across three measures in the 2018 Action Plan benefited at a total cost of just over €4 million.
The Ballybane/Doughiska Sports Hub’s main body of work is to develop sport and physical activity infrastructure to support existing and future activities. Links will be created between clubs and communities in the areas. The hub will aim to deliver physical activity opportunities, thereby increasing participation through improved facilities (already funded in previous application), better communication, and a greater availability of training for clubs, participants and administrators.
The Department of Rural and Community Development is supporting a number of projects using Dormant Accounts funds. Almost €10 million will be spent in 2018 support Social Innovation Fund, Senior Alert Scheme, Alone and the Age Friendly Ireland Programme.
The Department of Rural and Community Development matches every euro Social Innovation Fund Ireland raises in philanthropy from the Dormant Accounts Fund. In December 2018, the Department of Rural and Community Development provided match funding to Social Innovation Fund Ireland to the value of €2.7 million. This increase in match funding reflects the department’s commitment to Social Innovation Fund Ireland’s growth and to backing social innovations in Ireland.
It includes match funding for Social Innovation Fund Ireland’s newly announced Youth Awards, which will provide supports and cash grants to fifteen successful applicants of the Youth Mental Health and Youth Education Funds. Together, the Youth Funds have a value of over €10 million and will be delivered over the course of three years.
