Minister for European Affairs, Thomas Byrne TD held a virtual meeting yesterday with his French counterpart, Secretary of State for European Affairs Clement Beaune. This was followed this morning by a virtual meeting with his German counterpart, Minister of State for Europe Michael Roth, to discuss the new situation following the withdrawal of the United Kingdom from the European Union.
Minister Byrne thanked both countries for their solidarity during the Brexit negotiations culminating in the Trade and Co-operation Agreement.
He said:
"This was a necessary agreement, which required a tremendous amount of effort and negotiation and we thank you for your solidarity throughout the process."
During both meetings, the Ministers discussed the Northern Ireland Protocol and how to make it work on the ground for all communities in Northern Ireland.
Minister Byrne said:
"Difficulties will arise during this initial period post Brexit, but it is important that we work together to protect peace in Ireland while also protecting the European Single Market."
Minister Byrne and Minister Roth also exchanged viewpoints on the Brexit Adjustment Reserve and discussed the ongoing response to the pandemic and the vaccine rollout programme.
