Minister for Housing, Planning and Local Government Eoghan Murphy TD, today (16th July 2018) officially opened the latest housing project by Carlow Voluntary Housing Association Ltd (trading as Tinteán), in partnership with Delta Centre in Carlow.
The opening ceremony was also attended by Brian O’Donoghue, Cathaoirleach of Carlow County Council and members of Carlow County Council.
Tinteán Willow was developed by Carlow Voluntary Housing Association working in partnership with Carlow County Council and the Department of Housing, Planning and Local Government as part of the Rebuilding Ireland Programme. The house was constructed in 2016/2017 with funding from the Capital Assistance Scheme plus funds from Tinteán.
It is a landmark project – the first group home for people with disabilities designed and constructed to Passive House standards. It has been built on an existing site with an existing special needs home and has been designed to create a shared, private area between the two homes.
The house will serve as a home from home for elderly special needs tenants with care provided by Delta Centre.
Tinteán Willow contains spacious living/dining room, kitchen, family rooms and two wet rooms, six special needs bedrooms (two ensuite) and carer accommodation on the second floor.
Staff and Board members from Delta Centre and Tinteán were on hand to welcome the residents to the official opening of their new home, along with their friends and family.
Tinteán is an approved voluntary housing body and has been providing housing in Carlow for almost 25 years. Tinteán owns and manages 108 units of housing in Carlow Town, Graiguecullen and Tullow for the elderly, family housing and people with intellectual disabilities.
At the opening Mr. Eoghan Murphy, TD, Minister for Housing, Planning and Local Government said “This government recognises the serious challenge we face in terms of housing and a critical focus and priority has been firmly placed on responding to this challenge through the development and implementation of the Rebuilding Ireland Action Plan for Housing and Homelessness.”
The Minister also noted that, “…it is critical at this stage to ensure that all the structures already in place are aligned, co-ordinated and co-operating towards a shared vision. This includes the department, the Housing Agency and the Housing Finance Agency working with local authorities and Approved Housing Bodies across the country. Local authorities and Approved Housing Bodies working in partnership is a model that the department encourages, and this scheme here today highlights the real progress on the ground being achieved to address the challenges we face in the housing sector.”
The Minister commended all those involved with this project, “…from its inception to what we see here today, a home from home for the residents and I wish them every happiness in their new homes.”
