Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine Charlie McConalogue T.D today attended the first meeting of the Agricultural & Fisheries Council under the Hungarian Presidency.
Referring during the Council to the importance of maintaining viable rural areas, the Minister emphasised the vital role that agriculture plays for vibrant rural areas:
“Economically sustainable farmers, fishers and foresters are an integral part of the rural and coastal community. Healthy environments, ecosystems, communities and economies go hand in hand.”
In relation to generational renewal, and the need to attract young people and new entrants into farming, the Minister said:
“The challenge of attracting young people and new entrants into a career in farming is widely recognised. Our national stakeholder-led strategy for the agri-food sector, Food Vision 2030, highlights the challenge of generational renewal and proposes several actions, including maintaining the current strong level of support, the promotion of succession planning & land mobility, and increased education and promotion of the diversity of careers in the agri-food sector.
To address these challenges, I believe it is crucial that we have a robust, well-funded CAP, one that continues its focus on the next generation of farmers.”

Notes for Editors:
The EU’s common agricultural policy (CAP) is a partnership between society and agriculture that ensures a stable supply of food, safeguards farmers’ income, protects the environment and keeps rural areas vibrant. EU countries implement the CAP at national level with a tailored CAP Strategic Plan for the period 2023-2027.
