Process for Recommendation prior to the Nomination of a Person by the Government to the Office of Chief Justice

Arising from the forthcoming retirement of the current Chief Justice, the government has established a process for recommendation prior to the nomination of a person to be appointed as Chief Justice by the President under the Constitution.

A non-statutory advisory Committee has been set up to invite and consider expressions of interest in the position of Chief Justice, and to make recommendations for consideration by the government.

The Committee comprises:

  • Jane Williams, Chair of the Top Level Appointments Committee
  • Justice Sean Ryan, President of the Court of Appeal
  • Séamus Woulfe, Attorney General

Expressions of interest

Expressions of interest are invited from eligible persons, that is, serving Judges and practising Barristers and Solicitors eligible for appointment as a Judge of the Supreme Court in accordance with Section 5 of the Courts (Supplemental Provisions) Act 1961 (as amended).

The expression of interest should set out the person’s education, professional qualifications and experience relevant to the position of Chief Justice, accompanied by a statement (maximum 500 words) setting out the reasons for the person’s interest in and suitability for the office, including his/her capacity to carry out the leadership role in the Judiciary.
