Taoiseach meets UN High Commissioner for Refugees

Taoiseach Micheál Martin met with United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) Filippo Grandi at Government Buildings this morning (Wednesday).

Commissioner Grandi briefed the Taoiseach on the latest situation unfolding in a number of humanitarian crises around the world, fuelled by conflict, climate change and displacement.

The Taoiseach reiterated Ireland’s continuing support for the agency, with €27.8 million provided for UNHCR in 2024 to deal with crises in Ukraine, Sudan, the Middle East and Venezuela.

Speaking after the meeting, the Taoiseach said:

“I greatly appreciated the opportunity to meet with Filippo Grandi and discuss the vital work being carried out by the UNHCR.

“In these turbulent times, and with many countries reducing their aid, I was pleased to reassure him on Ireland’s continued strong support and financial assistance for the UNHCR.

"UNHCR’s work has never been more needed, and Ireland places enormous value in our partnership with the UNHCR.”

Commissioner Grandi’s term at the UNHCR ends this December after four decades of humanitarian work.

The Taoiseach last met with Commissioner Grandi in Munich in February and at last year’s UN General Assembly in New York.
