Taoiseach Leo Varadkar will meet the Prime Minister of Luxembourg, Xavier Bettel, in Government Buildings today.
The two leaders, who meet each other regularly at meetings of the European Council and other international summits, will discuss critical issues for Europe including the war in Ukraine, and protecting Europe’s economic competitiveness.
Following their meeting the Taoiseach will join Prime Minister Bettel at a reception to celebrate Luxembourg’s National Day, which occurs later this month.
Speaking ahead of the visit, the Taoiseach said:
“Prime Minister Bettel is a long-standing friend and ally to Ireland. It’s a great pleasure to welcome him back to Dublin. There are many issues on which Luxembourg and Ireland have stood shoulder to shoulder, on trade and competitiveness and the economic and foreign policies adopted by the EU. I am particularly grateful to Xavier for his support during Brexit to ensure there is no hard border on our island.
“Ireland and Luxembourg are committed Member States of the EU. We enjoy excellent bilateral relations, and I will thank Mr Bettel for his government’s decision to open a resident Embassy in Dublin. It represents an upgrade in our relations.
“We will also discuss some of the most important issues coming up at the next meeting of the European Council later this month. Both our governments believe in strengthening the single market, and ensuring that the EU is a world leader for new digital and green technologies. Ireland and Luxembourg also stand in solidarity with Ukraine, and the energy crisis caused by Russia’s brutal invasion reinforces the need for Europe to accelerate the radical transformation of our energy system.”
