These regulations were introduced to promote the environmentally sound management of waste tyres.
The Waste Management (Tyres and Waste Tyres) Regulations 2017, S.I. 400 of 2017 came into effect on 1st October 2017. In accordance with the Waste Management (Tyres and Waste Tyres) Regulations 2017; a person who, for the purpose of trade or otherwise, in the course of business supplies tyres (or waste tyres) to other persons - whether as manufacturer, wholesaler, supplier, trader, retailer or waste tyre collector; is legally obliged to join the compliance scheme operated by the approved body:
Repak ELT,
Red Cow Interchange Estate,
Clondalkin,
Dublin 22,
D22 HW67.
They provide a framework for comparing the number of waste tyres with the number of tyres placed on the market - and for tracking the movement of waste tyres from the time they are discarded until they are reused or processed for recycling and/or recovery.
