The Native Woodland Intervention for Remediation of Industrial Cutaway Peatlands Pilot Scheme 2024-2027 is intended to facilitate afforestation measures on state owned former industrial cutover peatlands on a pilot basis. This Pilot Scheme will facilitate native woodland regeneration at landscape scale, aiming at minimum intervention, and is compatible with other forms of peatland restoration measures at this scale. The overall purpose of the Pilot Scheme is therefore different to the objectives of the current Afforestation Scheme.
Industrial cutaway peatlands are specifically excluded from general afforestation support schemes open to landowners. This Pilot Scheme is very distinct from the Afforestation Grant and Premium Scheme as relatively vast areas of former industrial cutaway land types exist. These areas require different and special silvicultural techniques, operational timescales, environmental impact assessment, and on-going management to convert to native woodland than are permissible under currently available schemes.
This Pilot Scheme is confined to State bodies who own former industrial cutaway peatlands, is administered by the Department, and will operate on sites selected throughout the State.
