The Office of Government Procurement has published ‘Opportunities and approaches for Sustainable Public Procurement: A reference for public procurement practitioners and policy makers’. This reference, for the first time, brings together in one place the wide range of international, European, and national policies and guidance across both green and socially responsible public procurement.
Minister of State with special responsibility for Public Procurement Ossian Smyth T.D., welcomed the document saying:
“Ensuring sustainable consumption and production patterns, one of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, requires everyone and every organisation to purchase sustainably. In the public sector, we have the opportunity, through Sustainable Public Procurement, to lead by example, and influence the market.
“This Sustainable Public Procurement reference is a significant resource for the public sector. It adds to the body of guidance, tools, and arrangements the Office of Government Procurement has developed for the public sector to lead the transition to a more sustainable economy and society.”
This reference document was developed to show policymakers the potential of strategic public procurement, and to support public sector buyers to procure goods, services and works in a way that is socially and environmentally sustainable.

The Office of Government Procurement (OGP) plays a central role in helping the State to achieve value for money when buying common goods and services on behalf of the public sector. It operates as a division of the Department of Public Expenditure NDP Delivery and Reform.
